The Hans-Furler-Gymnasium is a secondary school located in a magnificent Black Forest valley, bordering on France and Switzerland. Straßburg – the capital of Europe with its European Parliament - is only a stone`s throw from our doorstep, too.
Due to the cultural and political history of our area our school is obliged to the idea of the European Union and Community. Our school`s name refers to Hans-Furler who was the first German President of the European Parliament (1960 – 62). And there`s still the Hans-Furler-Foundation supporting school activities linked to the idea of European partnership and intercultural encounters like student exchange programmes or European competitons.
About 800 pupils are taught by an average of 70 teachers. Pupils start to attend our school at
the age of 10 and stay until they are 18 years old. After mastering the “Abitur” - the final exam - they have the possibility to study either at all universities in Germany or abroad or to get a practical and professional training at a company, i.e. to learn by doing.
All of our students get a good training in English right from the beginning. Beyond learning English French is obligatory. Courses in Italian or Latin can be attended additionally starting from grade 8. Regarding our international contacts we are twinned with schools in Winchester/ USA, Mantova/ Italy and Troyes and Straßburg/France. At present we are still looking for a twin in Great Britain.
Apart from language courses the students can focus on scientific subjects like chemistry, physics and biology. Mathematics is one of the main subjects and the school is proud of having won numerous European competitions in mathematics. Courses in art and music as well as a drama group are very popular and complete our school`s profile. Physical education is taught on a high level and even comprises climbing.
The Hans-Furler-Gymnasium is situated in a lovely rural area and surrounded by an orchard. On foot it takes about 10 minutes to reach the city`s heart. Within the campus there are a gym where the sports lessons take place and a cafeteria where the pupils get a hot meal or other kinds of snacks during their lunch break.
The “Ortenaukreis” – so to speak our county - offers a wide choice of leisure facilities, e.g . the “Europa Park” in Rust, the largest seasonal leisure park worldwide, is only 50 kilometres away from our town Oberkirch, Baden Baden, the world famous spa, is just round the corner and the university towns Freiburg and Karlsruhe can be reached in an one hour`s drive. But there`s still much more to see and enjoy; not to forget our typical and famous gastronomy ranging from good dishes at reasonable prices to meals for gourmets.
